Dear Praying Friends,
We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers. Like the faithful Philippians, you have sent once and again unto our needs. Thank you! You have been fellowhelpers to the truth.
The process of our transition from Mexico to Chile has taken much longer than I ever anticipated. That has meant frustration both for me and for Andres (in Chile), but every delay has come about in a very providential manner. I have to frequently remind myself of Proverbs 16:9, "A man's heart deviseth his way, but the LORD directeth his steps." In a situation maybe a little similar to mine, Paul wrote to the very young and needy church at Thessalonica, "we would have come unto you... once and again; but Satan hindered us" (I:2:18). Remember Paul's thorn in the flesh? It was given by God in His sovereign purpose, yet was a messenger of Satan (2 Cor 12:7). We would have been in Chile long ago if it was up to us, but circumstances only in God's control have slowed us. We have felt "buffeted" to put it mildly. But our confidence rests in God, whose strength is sufficient.
We have gathered all the U.S. government, medical and other documents required by the government of Chile to apply for a residence visa. We are working the best we can to expedite this process. The slowdown came with the medical certificates. The required check-ups turned up physical/medical conditions that needed further follow-up before we could proceed. So we have had additional appointments, and check-ups, and we are still waiting on some. An unusual (possible genetic) liver condition was discovered in Michael that is not yet fully diagnosed--we are waiting for results and a call from the doctor. Janet has a mass on her thyroid, but cannot get in to see her endocrinologist until the beginning of March. In addition, she injured an arm in December, has been in extreme pain, and is still trying to get help for it. Daniel fell this week and broke a bone in his right hand. He will be having surgery next Tuesday (Feb 8, 2011), and will need therapy afterwards. So, you can see some of what we have been dealing with, and we greatly need your prayers.
We have made good progress on deputation, visiting the churches which support the work. It has been a blessing and joy to my soul to travel through several states renewing contact with pastors and churches which send regular support to keep us on the field. I have been strengthened, as I have seen the love that you demonstrate toward me and my family, and the work of the Gospel in foreign lands! A few new churches have begun supporting the work. Thank you! The few current supporters that I have not yet visited have not been forgotten. I will most definitely be calling you for a visit before we leave for Chile.
Special offerings for the move have been very generous, for which we thank you, and thank the Lord! We have nearly enough on hand to cover all the expenses of the move and the set up. We will trust the Lord for the rest to come in according to His good pleasure.
Please continue to pray for the brethren we met in Chile, and for the many new contacts that we continue to receive through various means, especially the internet. I have been blessed to see the diligence with which Bro. Andres has given himself to the study of the word while waiting for our arrival. He has declared his conviction of a call to the ministry, for which we rejoice. Pray for him and Fabiola (and for their son who is due in May). Also for Osvaldo and Karen; for Oliver and Viviana; for Albert. They have all had plenty of trials, showing their need of a pastor close at hand. We continue to receive contacts from across the country of Chile seeking a sound, grace, gospel-preaching church. The country needs churches! Preachers must be sent. Chilean pastors must be trained. Pray for Chile, and for us to arrive soon!
Do not forget to pray for the brethren in Cardenas, SLP, Mexico. Pastor Tomas Olvera from Nuevo Progreso, and also preachers from the church in Torreon, visit them as often as possible, trying to be there monthly. Eduardo has continued teaching and preaching the word week by week, through setbacks and encouragements. Though wanting to resist the title of pastor, he works full-time running his restaurant, and still pastors the flock. You may have read in the news of the missionary in Mexico who was recently killed. That took place on the highway that I used to drive at least twice each month when I was driving regularly to Cardenas.
Please make a note of the administrative details that follow. Sherwood Baptist Church is moving to a new location, and so we will have a new mailing address for all support checks. Our McAllen home address will soon be discontinued also, and personal mail will be received at the Sherwood address.

If you want to put my name in the address, please place it on a second line, after Sherwood, and not before Sherwood. Also, support checks should be made to Sherwood Baptist Church, with my name or Chile in the memo line. We want to keep the US Postal Service and the IRS happy!
If you receive this as a printed letter, but do not receive emails from us, please write to me to be added to my email list also: dan@sherwoodbaptist.com.
Grace and Peace,
Danny G. Roten
